Myths and Facts About Cortisol

February 3, 2025 at 10:43 am, No comments

What is cortisol and how does it work?

Cortisol is a hormone released by the adrenal glands when the body is under stress. It plays an important role in several processes, such as:

  • Regulating blood sugar levels - cortisol stimulates the release of glucose to provide the body with energy.
  • Regulating inflammation - to reduce inflammation during acute illness.
  • Maintaining stable blood pressure - ensuring effective blood circulation when the body is under stress.
However, prolonged elevated cortisol levels are associated with health problems such as weight gain, sleep disturbances, weakened immunity and even mental health problems.

Common myths about cortisol:

"Cortisol is always bad"

Truth: Cortisol is absolutely essential for the body to function. Not only does it help us cope with stress, it also ensures that we are able to concentrate, maintain a level of alertness and respond to threats.

"You can completely avoid cortisol spikes"

Truth: Stress is an integral part of our lives, and the body's response to it is natural. Fluctuations in cortisol levels are normal, especially within the framework of a circadian rhythm.

"High cortisol levels are always the result of prolonged stress"

Truth: Cortisol levels can increase not only due to stress. Intense training, medication, or diet can affect this hormone.

Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt to stress and maintain homeostasis (the body's self-regulation). Two popular adaptogens - Lion's Mane and Reishi mushrooms - stand out for their ability to support the nervous system and reduce the effects of stress hormones.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) often referred to as the “elixir of eternal youth,” the Reishi mushroom has been used for centuries in Eastern medicine to improve overall health by:

  • Regulates cortisol levels: Studies have shown that Reishi extract can reduce the release of cortisol caused by stress.
  • Supports immune system function: Reishi mushrooms contain beta-glucans, which strengthen immune cells.
  • Promotes sleep: Reishi is a natural adaptogen that calms the nervous system and improves sleep quality - an essential factor in the process of normalizing cortisol.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is known for its positive effects on brain function and nerve regeneration. Studies show that Lion’s Mane:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Studies show that taking Lion’s Mane extract for 4 weeks reduced symptoms of anxiety and improved concentration.
  • Promotes nerve growth factor (NGF): This is an important protein that regenerates nerve cells and can improve the body’s response to stress.

How to incorporate adaptogens into your daily routine?

Choose quality products: Make sure the supplement is high in beta-glucans and standardized, has a traceable manufacturing process, and is tested by reputable laboratories.

Start small: It’s important to understand how your body responds to a particular adaptogen.

Use regularly: Long-term effects often outweigh short-term improvements.

Cortisol is not the “enemy,” but rather a natural helper for the body in difficult situations. However, prolonged elevated cortisol levels can lead to health problems. Adaptogens, such as Lion’s Mane and Reishi, offer an effective, natural way to support cortisol regulation and improve overall well-being.
